1979 Mercedes SL350 V8
According to the SL Shop, this metallic blue and black are the most desirable colours for this car and it really does look beautiful in this colour! Arguably, this 3500cc V8 is the most desirable engine, as most people prefer the rumble of the V8 over the V6, and the 350 is more economical than the big 450/500.
These SLs are a sound investment and I’ve read they have increased 86% in value this past 12 months and 27% per month since June 2016.
I bought this car as a stalled restoration. The restoration was started in 2013 by the previous owner. He had over £3000 of work done over a period of 4 years. When I got the car, the interior had been removed, a couple of holes in the floor welded and all undersealed. I cleaned up the interior and with the help of my auto electrician, rebuilt it all and refitted the dashboard and electrics. Seatbelts were frayed so these have been replaced with new units. The stereo had been removed so I’ve replaced with a period Pioneer radio/cassette and put in new Pioneer speakers front and rear. I’ve read on the forums that the cloth seats are again probably the most desirable as they are more comfortable than the usual MTex vinyl and much rarer than MTex or leather. The vinyl is in good condition but some of the fabric has frayed especially on the front seat bases, as you would expect of the age. I was going to have them reupholstered but at the moment all suppliers are out of stock of the blue check fabric. (I’ve found a couple of suppliers in Germany which can supply the correct check in grey.)
The convertible roof is in good condition other than a small rodent hole which has been flush patched and is not noticeable from 6 feet away.
The car comes with a matching hardtop but does require new glass and TLC. In my opinion, this is a car you only use in the summer so I haven’t done any work on the hard top.
Mechanically, the car is superb. It fires up straight away and the V8 is super smooth and has a great burble. The last owner fully serviced the car with new oil, filters, spark plugs, auto box fluid, rear springs, exhaust box.
I have spent the last few months recommissioning the car with: New front brake calipers, discs, pads. Rebuilt rear calipers, new discs, pads.
As you can see in the photos, the exterior is in excellent condition. The car has been resprayed just once by the look of it and I would guess at around 10 years ago. It is still in excellent shape with only a few very small marks. The usual areas for rust are non existant, ie wheel arches are nice metal all round with no signs of filler, the bulkhead and front wings are all perfect. The sills look to have been replaced more recently. I have shown all these in close up photos. There are a few deep scratches behind the softtop cover/in front of boot and light scratches on the boot lid. But these will be repaired before sale. The chrome work and rubbers are all excellent. The alloy wheels have been refurbished.
The car comes with the original owner’s manual, a new Haynes manual, a spare wooden steering wheel, original hardtop, original data card showing options and colour codes etc. The private plate ‘KEN 147 P’ (good if your name is Ken and you’re good at snooker?!) that comes with the car has been valued at £1500 by the last owner, but I’ve had values of £800. It’s HPI clear and has two spare keys.
