1 owner car. Only 68K miles. UK only limited edition – one of only 25-50 produced (estimate) and one of two remaining in the world
Alfa introduced a few special editions of the GT during the 70s, such as the SE and Strada. Not many people, even enthusiasts on the Alfa forums, have ever heard of the GTS but they were definitely an actual Alfa model and I have an original sales brochure that comes with the car. This is a rare special edition, UK only model and came with the following features: velvet upholstery (more expensive than leather at the time), rear wiper, electric windows, sun roof, front and rear dual Hella fog lights, GTS graphics, rubber protection strips down each side. It is the only special edition with the 1.6 engine as the others have the 2.0.
Our research estimates there being between 25-50 of these cars made. And we only know of one other remaining car in existence. Yes, this car is ONE of TWO left in the world.
Bought new in the UK by an Italian gentleman who relocated back to Italy a few years later, so the car has spent virtually its entire life in sunny Tuscany. He informs me it was only used on special occasions and sunny days hence the very low mileage of 68,000.
The car comes with a fair amount of service receipts while in Italy but much work was done for cash as the Italians do. The car was not used for the last 6 years due to change in the Italian laws on registering the car: It was no longer possible to keep the original registration number and the car would have to be reregistered on an Italian plate which the owner did not want to do. He was also in his 80s and did not want to drive the car.
Somehow the V5 shows 3 previous owners but I have correspondence from the Italian gentleman proving this is a one owner car. I believe a family member imported the car into the UK and then an amateur dealer bought and sold the car to me a week later, somehow adding himself and me to the V5 owner list. I have written to the DVLA to try and rectify and now should revert to one owner on the new log book.
The car was resprayed in Italy around 10 years ago. The sunroof could not be saved so the roof is a canvas cover which looks like a Webasto sunroof. The panel could easily be removed if required. The ugly side rubbers were removed during the respray and not refitted.
Upon returning to the UK, the car was taken for an MOT where it failed on a few items: binding brakes, two bulbs, two bushes, and an exhaust gasket. We have spent the last 6 months recommissioning the car and refurbishing the interior.
The interior had suffered cosmetically from the hot climate. The dash has some cracks (as most of them do). The carpet was bleached from black to sandy beige colour everywhere other than underneath the centre console. The seat fabric had bleached from an ochre to a creamy pink. The carpets have been redyed black, and seats reupholstered in matching velvet to the original. Door cards have been redyed, custom dash mat made, new gearstick knob and handbrake gaiters, new fixing screws, stainless steel polished, electric windows fixed, the original steering wheel refitted.
Externally, we have fitted NOS Hella fog lights front and rear. Removed the bumpers and machine polished them and replaced the black trim. Repainted the black plastic front grill and lower spoilers. Removed the wheels, undersealed the arches, hammerited the reverse of the wheels, machine polished the hub caps, fitted new beauty rings and new chrome wheel nuts.
Our car has spent nearly all its life in Italy, away from the harsh British climate and salty winter roads that have killed off a majority of Italian cars of this period. It has been regularly waxoyled so there has never been any rust on this car. There is no sign of any filler. All wheel arches are perfect steel all the way around. Underneath, the car is in excellent condition and is all waxoyled.
The tyres are all matching Pirellis with full tread.
The paint shows the odd mark as it was refinished around 10 years ago but as you can see in the photos still looks excellent from a few feet away. Currently being resprayed, it will be ready at the end of October.
